If you’re not from California you might not realize how serious the drought really is. Let me tell you, it’s very serious. California has almost no water! Our snow pack is the lowest it’s been in over 500 years. Today, I’ve partnered with Scotts® EveryDrop™ to share some water saving tips.

Things are so serious here in California that we have signs on the highway encouraging California residents to save water. There is also a smartphone app that allows you to report people who are wasting water. Can you imagine that?

We all really have to do our part to conserve water which is often easier said than done. Thankfully, there are some easy ways to save water and help all of your fellow California residents.

Keep reading! I share 5 tips on saving water during the drought. One of these tips you’ve probably never heard of before.

How to save water during a drought

1. Scotts® EveryDrop™ – I know that we all want a pretty lawn but during a drought that’s normally pretty hard to achieve. Now there is away to keep your lawn looking greener without wasting all that water! Scotts® EveryDrop™ is the product that we have started using to ensure we are making the most of the water available. Scotts® EveryDrop™ is designed to move more water into the soil consistently and evenly. The wetting agents help to reduce water runoff and pooling on your lawn.

One of my favorite things about Scotts® EveryDrop™ is that it works whether you are using a hose, sprinklers or rain. My lawn has dried up a lot over this long hot summer we’ve had in California. However, I keep hearing that we are expecting a big raining season and I plan on making sure my lawn uses up any water from the sky that we get.

2. Take Shorter Showers – I love taking hot showers! Seriously, they are the best. I can just stand in a nice warm shower for 30 or 40 minutes. I was pretty bummed when I realized those long showers weren’t going to help the water situation in California. I’ve now cut down my showers to about 10-minutes, which for me is pretty good since I have super long hair to wash. I’ve also explained to my kids that they need to set their iPhone timer on their phone prior to getting in the shower, that way I know the whole family is doing their part.

3. Only Wash Full Loads – Whether you are doing dishes or laundry you want to ensure you are only washing full loads. Washing half loads is only going to waste water that really doesn’t need to be wasted.

4. Make Sure Your Home Is Leak Free – Let me tell you from personal experience how important this is. We recently had a major leak but not an obvious one in our home. Our leak was underground on our property and we had no clue until the water company showed up at our home and told us. We wasted thousand of gallons and had a water bill that was almost $500! Our bill is normally about $65. Do yourself a favor and learn how to read your water meter and check it on a regular basis. That’s the best way to detect a leak.

5. Consider Updating Appliances – If you have some wiggle room in your  budget for new appliances this might be something to consider. New appliances are made to save energy and water!
